What Is a Tool Roll?...Good Question!

The name "tool roll" seems pretty self-explanatory but do you know the value the right one can bring to your life? If not, here is the break down of what a tool roll is, a little history and what the right tool roll can do for you.

Our understanding of the history of the tool roll is that they were created as a way for motorcycle riders to carry their tools on the back of the bike. Typically, they are made of leather, canvas or waxed canvas. The best tool rolls are flexible enough to roll but sturdy to hold all of your collections.

The Defiance Tools® Waxed Canvas Tool Roll

We worked hard to find the right manufacturer and the right fabric for our Defiance Tools Waxed Canvas Tool Roll. We knew we wanted canvas- an extremely heavy-duty plain-woven fabric. But what weight of canvas and should it be waxed?

First, we bought different fabrics, so we could feel the difference. Canvas actually comes in weights. The weight is based on the square yard of fabric weight in ounces and correlates the density of the yarn used. There are 3 categories: lightweight(under 12 Oz.), mid-weight (12 Oz. – 16 Oz.) and heavyweight (anything above 16 Oz.).

After we had a few fabrics in hand we knew we wanted a 12oz canvas. It was sturdy enough for the tool roll and still allowed you to roll it up freely. Once feeling a waxed canvas sample, it also became clear that we wanted the canvas waxed. Waxed canvas has a great feel and provides an added protection from moisture and dirt. 

During a trip to China we had contacted several fabric bag manufacturers and once we were ready to make our tool roll asked for several samples. We were fortunate to find a great partner and saw their factory prior to going into production. From this research we are proud to have our Defiance Tools 12oz. Waxed Canvas Tool Roll as part of our collection.

What Makes Up a Good Tool Roll?

Our Defiance Tools 12oz. Waxed Canvas Tool Roll has 10 pockets or slots, measures 26” wide x 14 ¼” high and has a 6 ½” internal flap that protects and covers your tools. It makes life easy when you need to take your tools (or any other collection) on the road.

When it's rolled up our waxed canvas tool roll measures only 6” in diameter by 14 ¼” long. That means it is compact enough to easily store when space is limited. But the design can even handle tools that are up to 14 inches in length. Tools not included...so there's plenty of room for yours.
